Visiting Geoscientist Programe

On 27th and 28th of February we had a pleasure to host a specialist from Manchaster UK. Professor
Jonathan Redfern paid us a visit as a part of Visiting Geoscientist Programe organized by the AAPG.
His main field of interests are North Africa and Nova Scotia in Canada, which do have similarities in
geology. During his visit we had opportunity to listen and learn from his vast experience in petroleum
industry and academic work. Workflow methods, understanding of basin evolution are the keys o
success in exploration. New laboratory methods combined with years of experience can bring
interesting results for scientist and collaborating companies. Professor reminded us that we need to
remember the roots of the geology and where it all began. In the field. Hard field work and research
can lower the risk of failure in hydrocarbons exploration.

Promoting our Chapter among first year students

On October 24, 2018, we organizational meeting of the AMU Student Chapter of AAPG took place. This event was a summary of our previous avtivities from the holiday period, as well as promoting our Chapter among first year students who are intrested in joining our ranks.

European Researchers Night 2018

On 28th of November 2018, students from our Chapter, took part in European Researchers Night, that where happend in Adam Mickiewicz Uniwersity. Our guests took part in lectures and workshops prepared by one of our member – Ewelina Niklas. The title of the workshops was: “Oil and gas researching – analysis and practical methods with describing of drill cores”. During this time pupils had an opportunity to get to know how oil and gas are generated and what methods are used in researching of hydrocarbons. Than, in active part of workshops, they were learning basics of drillcore analysis using simple structure and textural classifications for the rocks.

6th anniversary of our chapter AAPG UAM Poznan

On 26th of January we celebrated 6th anniversary of our chapter. On this occasion we organized an
Anniversary Appointment in Napiwek pub, where we spent evening in nice and relaxed atmosphere. In
the meeting participated members of the chapter and our advisor. The meeting was an opportunity to
summarize the last year of the chapter’s activity and discuss our plans for the future. We wish successes
and dream come true for all the members! See you at the next Anniversary of the chapter.

Computer workshop 3D – Mrs. Stephanie Nwoko

On 20th of October in AMU Institute of Geology we hosted Mrs. Stephanie Nwoko, with a practical
computer workshop called: 3D Reservoir Modelling Workshop, as a part of Visiting Geoscientist program.
Participants had an opportunity to work on Petrel 2016 by Schlumberger and gain knowledge from
experienced guest. During classes Mrs. Nwoko introduced and explained basic 3D modelling algorithms
and interpolation methods for reservoir modelling. Later students were given seismic data for
processing, which lead us to an accurate 3D model of our petroleum system. Next step was to calculate
the amount of oil and gas in given example based on porosity and density of reservoir rock. In the end
each student was asked, if examined area is rich or poor in hydrocarbons. Those few hours showed how
important and responsible is reservoir modeller job. We hope to have more workshops like this one. See

Electoral meeting

Electoral meeting of AMU Poznań Student Chapter of The AAPG was held on 20 June at the Institute of Geology. Our special guest was Jan de Jager, Shell’s long-term employee, who’s excellent specialist in the field of petroleum geology and currently training professionals from oil & gas industry all around the world. Jan de Jager is also a lecturer at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and faculty advisor of the AAPG student chapter at this university. He encouraged students to work actively in our chapter and told about the advantages of taking part in the Imperial Barrel Award competition.

Scientific Session in the AMU Institute of Geology

Day following the trip (24 April) our student chapter and the Vice-director of the AMU Institute of Geology organized the scientific session. The speakers were Guido Hoetz “Permian Gasfields in the Netherlands and their importance” (chief geologist in the EBN company), Relu Roban “Provenance of lower Cretaceous arenites from Outer Carpathians – implication in depositional systems reconstruction” (assistant professor at the University of Bucharest) and Contstantin Ungureanu “The use of electric resistivity tomography and near surface seismic methods in geotechnical engineering applications” (assistant at the University of Bucharest). Before the session, the foreign trip participants visited the Meteorite Craters Reserve – an exceptional area of the meteorite fall before ca. 5000 years and Museum of Earth.

Our new event!

The theme will be of depositional facies and processes of thick-layered sandstone flysch Carpathian. The results of the study are contained in a master’s thesis, established in 2015. at the Faculty of Geology, Geophysics and Environmental Protection, University of Science and Technology in Krakow.

Introduction will present the issues discussed in the engineering work, which reviewed the sedimentation processes leading to the formation of reservoir rocks for oil and gas in the deep sea environment.

Organizational Meeting

On Thursday, November 17th an organizational meeting of the chapter took place. We discussed the current issues and plans of our chapter for the next year. Mateusz Szczepanik – a field trip section coordinator in our chapter, presented a lecture entitled “From a grain to black gold, a scientific trip to Romania 2016” he talked about event which was organized together with the Student Geological Society of AMU in last semester (April).

Besides, during the meeting ambassadors of the Geotalent Programme by held the PGNiG company organized a short quiz about Oil&Gas industry. Congratulations to the winners: Szymon Belzyt, Martyna Górska, Kinga Waśko and Patryk Najder!

Visiting Geoscientist of the AAPG – Dr. Berend Van Hoorn – invitation

We kindly invite students, postgraduates and academics to the lecture of one of the greatest geologists of oil industry, held under the “Visiting Geoscientist” program – Mr.Berend Van Hoorn, titled “Structural setting of turbidite systems: a global comparison”.

It will take place on November 23th Wednesday between 11: 30-13: 00 in room 61, it will involve the presence of a hydrocarbon reservoir in the deep sea sediments. In addition, the speaker will present his views on the future specialists in the field of Earth sciences in the oil industry.

On the 8th of April 2016 Mrs Wieslawa Romaniuk presented a lecture titled “Various aspects of geological structure on the basis of selected methods of measuring well logging”. The meeting with specialist who has longstanding work experience gained in Geofizyka Torun was great opportunity to broaden the knowledge about the geophysics researches. The lecturer analyzed the results of measurement but also shown geophysicist work as fascinating and surprising.

“Geology of the Polish Carpathians – an international field trip to the European roots of the oil industry”

“Geology of the Polish Carpathians – an international field trip to the European roots of the oil industry” organized by AMU Poznań Student Chapter of the AAPG took place on 6th – 10th of May in Carpathians in the southern parts of Poland.

Students from Eötvös Loránd University from Budapest, University of Manchester, University of Aberdeen, AGH University of Science and Technology from Cracow and Adam Mickiewicz University from Poznań gathered all together to discover geology of Polish Carpathians and historical origins of oil & gas industry in Europe. At the beginning of our journey in the western parts of the Tatra Mountains we had a chance to observe and study different sequences of overlapping sedimentary rocks.

On the following day in the Outer Carpathians we have been studying flysch sediments that appeared to be very good reservoir rocks for hydrocarbons and right after an improvement of weather conditions we climbed on the highest peak in Bieszczady Mountains – Tarnica.

On the third day we visited Ignacy Łukasiewicz Museum in Bóbrka, where evidences of the very beginnings of oil & gas industry were still present. In the afternoon we took part in the oral session where our special guests and students had a chance to show their presentations. Later on we all enjoyed time spent together around a bonfire.

On the last day we took part in a long field trip organized by students from AGH University of Science and Technology from Cracow, during which we have seen an enormous outcrop in Rudawka Rymanowska and much more.

All in all it was a great experience, unforgettable field trip that gave us lots of memories worth remembering and a new point of view on geology of Polish Carpatians.All in all it was a great experience, unforgettable field trip that gave us lots of memories worth remembering and a new point of view on geology of Polish Carpatians.

“Reservoir engineering in petroleum industry” expert’s lecture – Mr Mariusz Dziadkiewicz (PGNiG)

On 11 March, 2015 Mr. Mariusz Dziadkiewicz (Head of Reservoir Engineering Division, Geology and Exploitation Department, Polish Oil and Gas Company) gave an expert’s lecture titled “Reservoir engineering in petroleum industry”. Mr. Dziadkiewicz presented some crucial technical and practical problems connected to reservoir management from a professional point of view.
