Łukasz will talk about the possibility of joining together science and informatics. Additionally he will present his idea for a geological software. There will also be a possibility to ask questions and share your ideas.

Geology of South-central Poland

A week ago we returned from a field trip which took place on 7-12 May. In the following days we had the opportunity to discover geology building of regions near two polish cities: Kraków and Opole. We went down to the Wieliczka mine, had a session of lectures in the Oil and Gas Institute (“Petroleum geology of the Polish Carpathians and their foredeep”), visited museum of Opole University (with interesting paleontological collection) and saw a lot of quarries and outcrops which showed us geological history of this beautiful region in Poland. We saw Devonian dolomites in Dubie quarry, Carboniferous sediments in Czerna outcrop, Permian laccolith in Zalas quarry, Triassic deposits in Krasiejów and Gogolin, Jurassic ammonites from Młynka quarry and Cretaceous limestones exploited in ‘’Odra’’ quarry in Opole. Those days allowed us to see how Poland was changing across the time and to meet other people whose love it as we. We would like to thank all participants, without whom this event cannot take place: students from universities from: Aberdeen (3), Bucharest (7), Cluj-Napoca (2), Iasi (2), Kiev (9), Opole (1), Sophia (1), Szeged (2) and Poznań (8), our supervisors George Ajdanlijsky, Relu Roban, Wojciech Stawikowski, Ivan Virshylo and our main guide from Opole University professor Adam Bodzioch for the opportunity to learn more about the geological past. We also would like to thank our financial supporters: Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, PGNiG GeoTalent for financial support and Eko-wiatr BIS company which provide us safety helmets.

Visiting Geoscientist Programe

On 27th and 28th of February we had a pleasure to host a specialist from Manchaster UK. Professor
Jonathan Redfern paid us a visit as a part of Visiting Geoscientist Programe organized by the AAPG.
His main field of interests are North Africa and Nova Scotia in Canada, which do have similarities in
geology. During his visit we had opportunity to listen and learn from his vast experience in petroleum
industry and academic work. Workflow methods, understanding of basin evolution are the keys o
success in exploration. New laboratory methods combined with years of experience can bring
interesting results for scientist and collaborating companies. Professor reminded us that we need to
remember the roots of the geology and where it all began. In the field. Hard field work and research
can lower the risk of failure in hydrocarbons exploration.

AAPG Visiting Geoscientist Program – “Interpretation of seismic data from compression areas”

On 15th of January 2018 as a part of the AAPG Visiting Geoscientist Program our guest was the most
prominent specialist of seismic data analysis in Poland – prof. Piotr Krzywiec from the Polish
Academy of Sciences with the topic “Interpretation of seismic data from compression areas”. The
lecture was about the rules in geological interpretation of thrust and inversion structures on seismic
profiles. Discussed structures were examples from Poland as well as from the world. Mr Krzywiec
told us about the utility of seismic, including using it to reconstruct developed structures and to
analyze petroleum systems.

We did it! – Outstanding European Student Chapter Award

We are happy to announce that our Chapter was rewarded with the international award – Outstanding European Student Chapter Award for activity in academic year 2016/2017. Prize was awarded by Europe Region Office of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.

We are pleased with such a huge distinction which is motivating us to the work in the further academic years. Simultaneously we would like to thank everyone from our members thanks to which AMU Sudent Chapter of AAPG operate so great.

Field trop to Bulgaria

New academic year has just began but our minds are still in Bulgaria, which we all will remember for a long time. Firstly the students would like to thank thier hosts dear professor George Ajdanlijsky and his student Temenuga Georgieva for the time and knowledge they shared with them about geology and history of Bulgaria. For their patience during field work with all of the participants. This course was very important and mind opening experience for students and lecturers.

On 14^th of September a group of 12 students from Institute of Geology at AMU Poznań took part in a journey to Bulgaria. After arrival in Sofia they were welcomed by professor George Ajdanlijsky, lecturer at Ivan Rylski Universtiy of Mining and Geology in Sofia. Their trip started early with introduction to regional geology.

On second day, when our students got to Kamchia they gathered together with other participants from Bucharest and Kijev. All of them received tools and theoretical explanation of their task for upcoming days. The key to success was discussion with others and attention to details.

Our colleges had opportunity to visit few interesting sites with outcrops of Galata formation next to Black Sea, in delta of Kamchia river and in Kamchia Basin. This formation is gas enriched sediment exploited offshore by Bulgarian petroleum companies. For all of the students it was brand new experience because they could analyze cliffs and outcrops which are a reservoir rock few kilometers away from their position.

Apart from field work, sediments description and sedlogs preparation there was a very nice weather. Everyone had their time to relax in the sea and on the beach.

Afternoons were booked for student conference where friends and colleges from other countries showed their master thesis, research papers and achievements of their Student Chapters. Variety of topics allowed them to learn about magmatic rocks, taxonomy and sedimentology. Our students also showed their master thesis and accomplishments.
A great surprise for other participants was a slideshow about Poland with invitation to our country.

The last day for all participants was very hard, because they all got very close together after the course and goodbyes are always hard. Friends from Romania and Ukraine left back home, but our students stayed for one more day. Their plan was to drive back to Sofia with several stops at outcrops with important stratigraphical boundaries and historical monuments.

Sofia needs to be visited for sure, but not without a proper guidance. They took part in a tour around city center with a young and full of positive energy guide. During this trip the city showed them it’s history. Sofia has changed many times during centuries and what’s impressive? That below XXth century building everyone could observe ruins and foundations of ancient constructions from Bulgarian through Turkish, to Romanian.

Last part of this trip was flight from Sofia to Berlin. This time goodbyes were even harder. The time they spent together was very productive and mind opening. Even Professor George joked that our students should stay and become his pupils. Full of new energy and motivation they faced new academic year awaiting next meeting.

European Researchers Night 2018

On 28th of November 2018, students from our Chapter, took part in European Researchers Night, that where happend in Adam Mickiewicz Uniwersity. Our guests took part in lectures and workshops prepared by one of our member – Ewelina Niklas. The title of the workshops was: “Oil and gas researching – analysis and practical methods with describing of drill cores”. During this time pupils had an opportunity to get to know how oil and gas are generated and what methods are used in researching of hydrocarbons. Than, in active part of workshops, they were learning basics of drillcore analysis using simple structure and textural classifications for the rocks.

Geological workshops for the school from Rokietnica

On 25th of December, students from the AMU Poznań Student Chapter of AAPG organized at our faculty workshops for students from 8th grade of primary school in Rokietnica. Teenagers learnt the basics about minerals and rocks, watched some of them on microscopes and visited our faculty Earth Museum which contains parts of famous iron meteorite founded near Poznań.

6th anniversary of our chapter AAPG UAM Poznan

On 26th of January we celebrated 6th anniversary of our chapter. On this occasion we organized an
Anniversary Appointment in Napiwek pub, where we spent evening in nice and relaxed atmosphere. In
the meeting participated members of the chapter and our advisor. The meeting was an opportunity to
summarize the last year of the chapter’s activity and discuss our plans for the future. We wish successes
and dream come true for all the members! See you at the next Anniversary of the chapter.

AAPG Visiting Geoscientist – „Petroleum systems in the Pannonian Basin” – Mr János Csizmeg,

On 7th of December 2017, we had an honor to host AAPG Visiting Geoscientist lecturer – Mr János Csizmeg with topic „Petroleum systems in the Pannonian Basin”. The lecture was about geological structure and origin of Hungarian part of Pannonian petroleum basin. The speaker told us among others about types of hydrocarbon traps which are occurring in this area and show us seismic profiles from Pannonian Basin. Finally, we could hear a little bit about benefits which are coming from being active member of AAPG Chapters. This speech was very positive and motivating for our students. Before lecture we show Mr Janos our famous meteorite craters in Morasko Meteorite Nature Reserve. During visit of our guest, in our institute we were celebrated st. Barbara name’s day (in polish – Barbórka), which in Poland is the day of miners and geologists. Mr János Csizmeg took part in all events we organized: artistic part where he expressed his satisfaction with the work that our chapter does in the front of all invited guests and dean’s authorities; “Barbórka’s inn” a dinner in the institute and a dancing party in club “Akumulatory”.

Thank you so much for visiting us and a lot of efforts which you put into it Mr János Csizmeg, we hope we’ll see you again!

Computer workshop 3D – Mrs. Stephanie Nwoko

On 20th of October in AMU Institute of Geology we hosted Mrs. Stephanie Nwoko, with a practical
computer workshop called: 3D Reservoir Modelling Workshop, as a part of Visiting Geoscientist program.
Participants had an opportunity to work on Petrel 2016 by Schlumberger and gain knowledge from
experienced guest. During classes Mrs. Nwoko introduced and explained basic 3D modelling algorithms
and interpolation methods for reservoir modelling. Later students were given seismic data for
processing, which lead us to an accurate 3D model of our petroleum system. Next step was to calculate
the amount of oil and gas in given example based on porosity and density of reservoir rock. In the end
each student was asked, if examined area is rich or poor in hydrocarbons. Those few hours showed how
important and responsible is reservoir modeller job. We hope to have more workshops like this one. See

Electoral meeting

Electoral meeting of AMU Poznań Student Chapter of The AAPG was held on 20 June at the Institute of Geology. Our special guest was Jan de Jager, Shell’s long-term employee, who’s excellent specialist in the field of petroleum geology and currently training professionals from oil & gas industry all around the world. Jan de Jager is also a lecturer at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and faculty advisor of the AAPG student chapter at this university. He encouraged students to work actively in our chapter and told about the advantages of taking part in the Imperial Barrel Award competition.

L. Austin Weeks Scholarship

We are pleased to inform, that our chapter have been selected as a scholarship recipient of the 2017 American Association of Petroleum Geologists Foundation L. Austin Weeks Scholarship program. Once again, we received $500 scholarship funds. Competition for this award is high, so we are proud of our achievement. This year the Foundation has received 363 applications from around the world, but only 170 of them have been awarded.

Scientific Session in the AMU Institute of Geology

Day following the trip (24 April) our student chapter and the Vice-director of the AMU Institute of Geology organized the scientific session. The speakers were Guido Hoetz “Permian Gasfields in the Netherlands and their importance” (chief geologist in the EBN company), Relu Roban “Provenance of lower Cretaceous arenites from Outer Carpathians – implication in depositional systems reconstruction” (assistant professor at the University of Bucharest) and Contstantin Ungureanu “The use of electric resistivity tomography and near surface seismic methods in geotechnical engineering applications” (assistant at the University of Bucharest). Before the session, the foreign trip participants visited the Meteorite Craters Reserve – an exceptional area of the meteorite fall before ca. 5000 years and Museum of Earth.

Permian of South-Western Poland

Between 19th and 23th of April 2017 our chapter organized “Permian of South-Western Poland” field trip. The major topic of the field trip was Permian geology of the North-Sudetic Synclinorium and Intra-Sudetic Synclinorium, two structural units in the Sudetes Mountains and its Foreland located in the SW Poland.

The group of 32 participants representing reaserchers, professionals and students from Poland (Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan), Romania (University of Bucharest and Babes Bolyai University) and the Netherlands (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Delft University of Technology and EBN) took part in field trip. Our guide was Dr. Wojciech Śliwiński from the University of Wrocław.

On the first day of the field trip (19th April) we visited two outcrops, Leszczyna and Płóczki Dolne in the North-Sudetic Synclinorium to observe succeeding stages of the Zechstein marine transgression, both are the complex of abandoned quarries. It was the shortest day in the field, because of the large distance we had to cross during this day from the starting point (Poznań).

On the second day we visited the KGHM company Rudna and Polkowice-Sieroszowice mines. It was a great opportunity to see how the Permian rocks look in fresh underground subcrops. Also we take a look at Wielisławka Organs – a rhyolitic volcanities buliding phenomenal wall and Rożana quarry with basaltic andesites with occurrences of agates.

On 21th April we visited two abandoned quarry: Świerzawa and Wojcieszów where are visible fluvial cylothemes and Cambrian methamorphosed limestones. We did a short tour around Bolków medieval castle ruins, and moved to Intra-Sudetic Synclinorium, to outrcrops in Wałbrzch (in the past .a big center of coal-mining) and to quarry Czarny Bór – Grzędy with Rotliegend-age trachyandesites .

In the evening, we had an oral session with eight talks. It was composed of two parts: the first, student session concerned mainly our M.Sc theses and topics associated with educational courses and second – presentations of professionals.

On 22th April we visited several inactive quarries: Nowa Ruda-Bieganów, Tłumaczów and Golińsk we had an opportunity to look at several different rock types of Rotliegend: mudstones, sandstones, conglomeratic and also succession of volcanic and pyroclastic rocks.

Łączna – the Czartowskie Skały (the Devilish Rocks) was a picturesque set of outcrops built by the Lower Triassic arcose sandstones. The last point of the day – Kochanów was the outcrops of massive dolomites which are interpreted to have primary travertine orgin. After the geological stops, we visited magnificent Krzeszów monastery – the pearl of Silesian baroque architecture.

On the last day of the field trip, we visited Radków which is an exposure built of clastic rocks with limestone intercalations interpreted as caliche deposits. The last point of the field trip was Karłów in the Stołowe Mountains, i. e. “the Table Mountains”, we did a touristic trail to the Szczeliniec Wielki, the highest peak of the range (919 m a.s.l.) the weather surprised us! Nobody expected a snowfall in the end of a April!
