The group of 32 participants representing reaserchers, professionals and students from Poland (Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan), Romania (University of Bucharest and Babes Bolyai University) and the Netherlands (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Delft University of Technology and EBN) took part in field trip. Our guide was Dr. Wojciech Śliwiński from the University of Wrocław.

On the first day of the field trip (19th April) we visited two outcrops, Leszczyna and Płóczki Dolne in the North-Sudetic Synclinorium to observe succeeding stages of the Zechstein marine transgression, both are the complex of abandoned quarries. It was the shortest day in the field, because of the large distance we had to cross during this day from the starting point (Poznań).

On the second day we visited the KGHM company Rudna and Polkowice-Sieroszowice mines. It was a great opportunity to see how the Permian rocks look in fresh underground subcrops. Also we take a look at Wielisławka Organs – a rhyolitic volcanities buliding phenomenal wall and Rożana quarry with basaltic andesites with occurrences of agates.

On 21th April we visited two abandoned quarry: Świerzawa and Wojcieszów where are visible fluvial cylothemes and Cambrian methamorphosed limestones. We did a short tour around Bolków medieval castle ruins, and moved to Intra-Sudetic Synclinorium, to outrcrops in Wałbrzch (in the past .a big center of coal-mining) and to quarry Czarny Bór – Grzędy with Rotliegend-age trachyandesites .

In the evening, we had an oral session with eight talks. It was composed of two parts: the first, student session concerned mainly our M.Sc theses and topics associated with educational courses and second – presentations of professionals.

On 22th April we visited several inactive quarries: Nowa Ruda-Bieganów, Tłumaczów and Golińsk we had an opportunity to look at several different rock types of Rotliegend: mudstones, sandstones, conglomeratic and also succession of volcanic and pyroclastic rocks.

Łączna – the Czartowskie Skały (the Devilish Rocks) was a picturesque set of outcrops built by the Lower Triassic arcose sandstones. The last point of the day – Kochanów was the outcrops of massive dolomites which are interpreted to have primary travertine orgin. After the geological stops, we visited magnificent Krzeszów monastery – the pearl of Silesian baroque architecture.

On the last day of the field trip, we visited Radków which is an exposure built of clastic rocks with limestone intercalations interpreted as caliche deposits. The last point of the field trip was Karłów in the Stołowe Mountains, i. e. “the Table Mountains”, we did a touristic trail to the Szczeliniec Wielki, the highest peak of the range (919 m a.s.l.) the weather surprised us! Nobody expected a snowfall in the end of a April!

Artykuł “Integration of geology and geophysics in hydrocarbon exploration and field development” – Carlos Aizprúa (Statoil) pochodzi z serwisu AMU Poznań Student Chapter of the AAPG.

At first the participants were learned on safety at the drilling site, learned about the parameters of the hole, drilling and history of the gas deposit underneath.

An important element of the trip was the sighting of the drilling rig itself, with the possibility of observing the work of the drillers during the removal of the pipes. They visited an electrician who told us what happens during a power failure and when power generators are needed on a drilling rig.

Geophysicists from Torun presented methods of geophysical investigation, used on drilling and how the actual information about drilling is displayed.

Expert of the drilling fluid (mud), showed how mud are used and what tests are done before the mud is used in the hole.

The geologist who worked there presented the lithological situation in the area and presented samples of the cuttings that had been selected from the hole. He showed ways of storing the material and told about problems with precise measurement of the thickness of the lithological layers. This was the last point of departure, after which participants after a short walk back to Poznan.

18 teams from all over the Europe participated in the competition: France, Great Britain, Russia, Norway, Hungary, Switzerland, Austria, Ukraine, Ireland and the Netherlands. The level was very high and off level. It was an amazing experience for participants to see how other college students are doing in the field of petroleum geology. The best team was Hungarian Eotvos Lorand from Budapest. Congratulations and we wish you good luck in Houston! The second place was London Royal Holloway team, while the third team was from Amsterdam. After announcing the results, all participants and judges had a chance to celebrate a competition in a traditional Czech restaurant. The event was celebrated with folk dances and songs, Dr. Jaromir Probulski gave a show of his vocal skills. We strongly recommend taking part in the competition for all younger colleagues. It is really worth the time, as knowledge gained will be useful for future work in the profession.

We sincerely thanks all who were symphatic of our team, especially Karolina Buszkiewicz, Mrs. Monika Kallista and the PGNiG Foundation – without the help of the Foundation the participation would not be possible. It will take place on November 23th Wednesday between 11: 30-13: 00 in room 61, it will involve the presence of a hydrocarbon reservoir in the deep sea sediments. In addition, the speaker will present his views on the future specialists in the field of Earth sciences in the oil industry.

The meeting took place in two Hungarian cities: Szeged and Miskolc, and therefore it was divided into two parts. The first one was based on lectures about modeling of hydrocarbon fields. It was complemented with the visit in the Mineralogical Museum of Szeged University. It took place in Szeged beatuful major city in the south-east of Hungary.

To the meeting as instructors there were invited Dr. Stuart Harker from Edinburgh and other experts, including Hungarian geologists: Janos Blaho (with the lecture “Geology of Algyő HC field”) and Gergely Dabi (“The role of fluid inclusions in basin-modeling”). The second part of the event was devoted to presentation of the geology of the Bükk Mountains, located in the north of Hungary.

The program also included a tour to a storage room for drill-cores, and to the gas mine. In addition to the scientific and educational purposes of the meeting it was also organized for integration of chapters and students representing them. The event created also for the participants the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the culture of Hungary. We are very grateful and we thank for the invitation. We really liked the meeting and for sure it will be remembered by us for a long time.

Artykuł 4th AAPG Leadership days – Miszkolc, Segedyn pochodzi z serwisu AMU Poznań Student Chapter of the AAPG.

Both of them participated in poster sessions. Jakub’s poster “The potential for unconventional resources of hydrocarbons in Poland, initial drilling results and future outlook” won 2nd place, Joanna’s poster “Hydrogeological aspects of shale gas extraction – protecting groundwater during hydraulic fracturing” won 3d place. Posters are available for viewing at the our Institute of Geology.

The Conference brings together some of the best students and young professionals to discuss the latest news and developments in the energy world, with a strong emphasis on the oil & gas industry, but also included topic of geothermal energy and environmental protection.

Also it was great opportunity to meet people interested in this topic from all around the world.

We encourage all members of our chapter to this kind of activity!
